(1) Specified Skilled Worker (i) is granted to foreign nationals who have sufficient knowledge and experience after going through certain procedures.

(1) Highly skilled foreign nationals will be granted permission to stay in Japan without certain restrictions on renewal of their period of stay by going through certain procedures.

(2) Family members (spouse and children only) may accompany you.

(3) Of the 12 specific industrial fields covered by Specified Skilled Worker (i), Specified Skilled Worker (ii) status of residence is permitted in all specific industrial fields except for the nursing care field.

What types of jobs in the construction industry are recognized as Specified Skills?

Foreigners can be employed in all construction businesses as Specified Skilled Worker (i).

If I already have the Japanese Language Proficiency Test N4 or above, will I be exempt from the Japanese Language Test?

If you have passed the N4 or higher exam, you do not need to take the Japanese language exam. However, you will need to submit the pass certificate.

If I want to transition from technical intern training to Specified Skills, do I have to return to my home country once?

There is no need to return to your home country; you can complete the procedure while remaining in Japan.

Is there an age limit for becoming specified skilled workers?

The minimum age is 18. There is no upper age limit.

Can women take The Specified Skills Evaluation Exam?

Women can also take the exam, and there are many women working in the construction industry.

How to become specified skilled workers and what exams to take

How can a foreigner who has never used the Technical Intern Training Program become Specified Skilled Worker (i)?

In order for a foreigner who has not used the Technical Intern Training Program to become Specified Skilled Worker (i), he or she must pass the designated Japanese language test and the Skills Test Level 3, or The Specified Skills (i) Evaluation Exam in the construction field.

How can a foreigner with technical internship experience become Specified Skilled Worker (i)?

(1) Foreigners who have completed Technical Intern Training (ii) are exempt from The Specified Skills Evaluation Exam and Japanese language test. Therefore, even foreigners can omit the exam and obtain Specified Skilled Worker (i).

(2) Foreign nationals who have completed Technical Intern Training No. 3 may be exempt from the examination and become Specified Skilled Worker (i), provided that they have also completed Technical Intern Training (ii) in a satisfactory manner.

(3) Foreign construction workers with “designated activities” residence status are required to have completed Technical Intern Training (ii), and can switch to “Specified Skilled Worker (i)” without taking an exam.

What is a "skills evaluation exam"?

The exam refers to the "Skill Test Level 3" or the "The Specified Skills (i) Evaluation Exam for Construction Industry," which is equivalent to the Skill Test Level 3 administered by JAC.

What is the content of The Specified Skills (i) Evaluation Exam?

(1) The exam consists of written questions and practical questions.

(2) The exam level is equivalent to the third-level trade skill test and tests the skills and knowledge that an entry-level engineer should typically possess.

What is the Japanese Language Examination?

This means level N4 or above on the JFT-Basic (Japanese-Language Test run by the Japan Foundation) or JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test run by the Japan Foundation and the Japan Educational Services and Exchange Association).

If I choose one job category and pass the exam, and then want to work in a position outside that category, do I need to retake the exam for the other category?

Can I become specified skilled workers by using a construction business license obtained overseas?

Those acquired overseas cannot be used. You must pass skills evaluation exam for Specified Skills System and the Japanese language test.

What is the passing score for The Specified Skills (i) Evaluation Exam?

You must achieve at least 65% correct answers in both the written and practical exams.

How to resolve concerns about work and life in Japan

Do specified skilled workers need an educational background?

(1) There are no educational requirements, but you must pass a Japanese language test and skills evaluation exam.

(2) You must also be 18 years of age or older.

Is it possible to obtain permanent residency from a "Specified Skills" residence status?

The maximum period for staying in Japan with a "Specified Skilled Worker (i)" visa is five years. Therefore, it is difficult to change the visa status to permanent resident.

I want to go to Japan with my family. Will my family be allowed to live in Japan with me?

Specified Skilled Worker (i) workers are not allowed to live with their families, but Specified Skilled Worker (ii) workers are allowed to bring their families along to live in Japan.

I heard that wages are higher in Tokyo. Is that true? I want to go to Tokyo and work.

It is true that salaries are higher in urban areas such as Tokyo. However, living expenses, transportation costs, and rent are also higher in urban areas, so in some cases the take-home pay after deducting living expenses may be higher in rural areas. Please take these factors into consideration when making your decision.

If I work for a construction company, do I need to prepare for living expenses such as rent and insurance?

(1) All people working in Japan are required to enroll in insurance designated by the Japanese government.

(2) There are three types of expenses that workers must pay from their salary: health insurance, employment insurance, and employee pension insurance. Depending on the worker's age, there is also additional old-age insurance (nursing care insurance). In addition to insurance premiums, there are other taxes that must be paid, such as income tax and resident tax.

(3) If you live in a company dormitory, you will also have to pay dormitory fees. The amount will vary depending on the company.

I have no experience working in the construction industry. If I pass the exam and then get a job at a construction company for the first time, will I need any special training?

(1) Anyone can work in the construction industry in Japan if they pass The Specified Skills Evaluation Exam in the construction field and the Japanese language test.

(2) Anyone who has never worked in the Japanese construction industry should learn from the safety training videos provided by JAC.

(3) In addition, new employees undergo training before starting work on-site.

If I pass an exam overseas, find a job and decide to go to Japan, who will cover my travel expenses?

If you pass the exam and find a company to work for, the company will usually cover your airfare and other immigration-related expenses.
This varies depending on each company's rules, so please check with the company first.

If I pass The Specified Skills (i) Evaluation Exam and the Japanese Language Test, can I go to Japan right away?

(1) You need to find a company to work for and sign an employment contract.
